Confused about the housing market and what it means to your business? You’re not the only one! Interest rates are low, but so is inventory in the affordable housing sector. The numbers are up and down depending upon where you live and the housing category. According to the National Association of Realtors’ Index, May marks the 17th straight month of annual declines.  So, what does this mean for the remodeling industry? It’s hard to say. After home remodeling spending hit a record high of nearly $425 billion in 2017, annual gains are projected to slow in more than half of the nation’s largest housing markets in 2019, according to a report from the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.

Annual Growth in Home Improvement Spending

With supplies of timber, aluminum, and steel being impacted by existing tariffs, and a shortage of skilled laborers, the refinishing industry may have a unique opportunity to grab what would have been full remodeling jobs. Refinishers use existing materials and coatings to make dramatic improvements to bathrooms and kitchens. By educating homeowners about this option, the price tag of a bathroom remodel can drop from $8,000.00 - $12,000.00 to a mere $1,500.00. Homeowners don’t have to wait to make improvements until they are ready to put their house on the market (which is when most remodeling activity occurs). The homeowner can upgrade their space and enjoy it as they live there. The improvements made will still yield an increase in value over the expense.

refinishing vs replacing costs

With all this trepidation and confusion in the housing market, refinishers have an exciting opportunity to expand their skills and fill a labor market gap. Robert Dietz, the chief economist with the National Association of Home Builders, said in a recent interview that “Most individual remodelers will say they’re busy and schedules are full because they don’t have enough help.” Building additional refinishing skills of your own and with your staff could give you a leg up to expand work with both existing and new clients.

Many of NAPCO's long-time bathtub refinishing customers have signed on for the new kitchen refinishing training program. Once these refinishers learn the cabinet taping technique and the methods for applying the Kitchen Renew waterborne coatings, they have been able to deliver both bathroom and kitchen refinishing jobs successfully. The best part about expanding refinishing skills to include kitchens is the jump in job pricing. A kitchen refinishing job can be very profitable, and a great additional revenue stream for your business.

NAPCO Celebrates 40 Years!

This summer marks the 40th anniversary of NAPCO’s debut in the refinishing industry, and we’re happy to report that after four decades things are looking brighter than ever! We’ve certainly changed quite a bit over the years, but our dedication to our professional refinishers remains the same. In fact, it is this dedication that has driven us to make many impactful changes to our business over the years.

Compared to where we are now, you might not even have recognized NAPCO when it was founded by Frank Miori in 1979. Frank himself was a bathtub refinisher and franchise owner for a local refinishing business, and though he enjoyed the work, he understood that becoming a franchisee came with unique challenges that many refinishers weren’t prepared to handle.

This is where the concept for NAPCO was born, and soon Frank launched the first-ever bathtub refinishing supplier specifically for small businesses. Frank’s goal was to make bathtub refinishing products accessible to any professional refinisher.

The business soon began to thrive, with hundreds of customers making use of NAPCO’s unique set of supplies. One such customer was Steve Coven, a professional refinisher and industry innovator. Steve also had a vision for NAPCO, and in 1993 he purchased the company from Frank.

Over the past 26 years, Steve has revolutionized NAPCO’s product development and customer service capabilities and currently serves as NAPCO’s CEO. One of Steve’s most notable accomplishments was introducing the company’s professional refinishing training program in 2005. Since then, training has been a cornerstone of the NAPCO business; helping men and women from all over the country get professional training in bathroom and kitchen refinishing and refinishing techniques.

Green Wise CertificationToday we continue to be a leader in the refinishing industry, adding a full-time Research and Development Specialist and Technical Manager to the staff in 2016. NAPCO’s mission is to make refinishing a safer and more efficient process, and our research and development team has come out with numerous low-VOC and waterborne products. Some of these products have even been granted the “Green Wise” stamp of approval from the Coatings Research Group. In addition, NAPCO products provide some of the most extensive color customization options available in the industry, giving customers the flexibility to offer a greater range of services to their clients.

NAPCO Essentials Kitchen Renew LineIn 2018, NAPCO made waves by branching out from bathroom refinishing into kitchen refinishing with the addition of refinishing training and supplies for kitchen cabinets and countertops. Our refinishing training program is now one of the best in the country and teaches professional refinishers safe and effective ways to apply bathtub, tile, kitchen countertop, and cabinet refinishing products. To date, NAPCO has successfully trained over 1,000 professional refinishers including trainees from the UK and Canada who have flown in just to take our training class.

The future is bright here at NAPCO, and you’ll want to stay tuned to see what new things we’ll have for you in the future. Having just won the “Chicago’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For” program for the third year in a row, we’re excited for the continued success of NAPCO. We hope you’ve enjoyed your journey in the refinishing business as much as we have, and we’re looking forward to the next 40 years!

NAPCO has announced its renewed partnership with Habitat for Humanity. This marks the second year that NAPCO and the global nonprofit housing organization have joined forces.

We’re proud to announce that we’ve been named one of Chicago’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in 2018 - the second year in a row that NAPCO has been recognized for this award. While over 800 companies were nominated for this award, NAPCO along with 160 other organizations were selected as award recipients.

Best Brightest Award 2018 NAPCO

NAPCO team at the awards ceremony

The Best and Brightest Companies to Work For competition selects and honors companies and organizations that continuously strive to raise operational standards, cultivate positive work environments, and are actively engaged with colleagues/employees as well as the surrounding community. This award program is facilitated by the National Association for Business Resources (NABR).

Unlike traditional awards that simply recognize companies for things they have done or achieved, Chicago’s Best and Brightest award encourages and supports past progress as well as future growth. Throughout the nomination and selection process, each company is evaluated by an independent firm on important measures revolving around continuous dedication to employee satisfaction. These assessment reports serve as critical guides that help benchmark where a company currently stands and areas where improvements can be made.

On July 27, 2018, all winning companies were invited to a luncheon and awards ceremony at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois Participating in the nomination process as well as the award ceremony presents us with an opportunity to truly look inward and outward, both recognizing our own progress and other companies in our community also committed to improving the lives of their employees.

NAPCO, Ltd. (North American Polymer Company), a national home refinishing and refinishing training company, received notice from Coatings Research Group, Inc. (CRGI) that its Kitchen Renew Satin Clear Coating for Countertops can be labeled, “Green Wise.”

CHICAGO (PRWEB) SEPTEMBER 25, 2018

Green Wise CertificationNAPCO, Ltd. (North American Polymer Company), a national home refinishing and refinishing training company, received notice from Coatings Research Group, Inc. (CRGI) that its Kitchen Renew Satin Clear Coating for Countertops can be labeled, “Green Wise.” Products bearing the Green Wise label have been tested and certified by CRGI to meet environmentally determined performance standards established by CRGI’s ISO-accredited facility for specific types of products and meet or exceed the VOC requirements of LEED® for most applications.

“Gaining Green Wise certification from the Coatings Research Group for the product that launched our kitchen refinishing division is an accomplishment for the entire NAPCO team,” stated Steve Zamborsky, Head of Research and Development and Technical Manager for NAPCO. “Our team has worked on creating more environmentally friendly, waterborne coatings for some time. Being recognized by an independent research group for meeting and exceeding their benchmarks for environmental safety is a real accomplishment in which we take a lot of pride,” he added.

The CRGI Green Wise certified product with < 100 g/L (VOC Limit scale) that was developed at the Skokie, Illinois-based company was the first to roll out in NAPCO’s expansion from bathroom and bathtub refinishing into kitchen refinishing. NAPCO’s “Essentials,” which includes its Kitchen Renew Satin products, include three unique refinishing coatings for kitchen cabinets and countertops. The first is a satin countertop coating that functions as a top coat over NAPCO’s popular Flint-Stone, faux-granite product. The other two items are kitchen cabinet coatings, both featuring a satin finish.

“Our priority is the safety of the contractors using our products as well as their customers,” said Steve Coven, CEO of NAPCO. “Quality is equally important. Receiving CRGI Green Wise certification confirms that not only are we on the right path as a company, but we are also doing the right thing for the environment.”
